Dont Miss! Bordetella Vaccination Question

Post by Mattison on Thu Jan 24, 2008 10:17 am

Mattison had his one year check up and our vet recommended that he get the bordetella vaccination every six months because he spends several days a week at doggie day care. Has anyone heard of this, or does anyone have their pets vaccinated for bordetella more than once a year?

There are MANY different opinions about this vaccine. I will say this about our dogs. We used to vaccine for Bordatella but do not anymore. But, our dogs don't spend a lot of time with other dogs either. We don't board them, they don't go to doggy day care and spend most of their time together. We've had experiences with kennel cough (bordatella) that lead us to believe it's not as good as the vet wants you to think. It's actually much like the human flu shot. Might work, might not. I'm sure there will be people here who will tear me apart for not vaccinating for it, but I know there are others who feel the same way I do about it.

We had a run of kennel cough just before Christmas. Only 3 of our crew got it. Two of them had been vaccinated against it.. I don't thing I will be getting them the shot again since it didn't make much difference. Now mind you it was a very mild case of it and they got better pretty fast.. Oh and the one who didn't get it was the one who should have.. Gumpy !!! go figure.

There are several strains of Bordatella. We have all our dogs
vaccinated and we have still gotten coughing from fosters bringing in a
different strain.
Much of what people call Kennel cough are resperatory viruses that Bordatella will not protect against.
most boarding kennels(good ones) require the shot

I know it is 'recommended' if you have show dogs as well. My four legged kids get it once a year.

I used to do it once a yr but then i had to board duncan for a few days and they (as do other kennels in my area) require it every 6 months.

We do our bordatella vaccine ourselves. It is VERY inexpensive to buy on your own. It is $3 a dose if you buy 25 at a time or $5 a dose single doses at a time through Dr. Foster and Smith. I do vaccinate our guys every 6 months due to all the dog sports we are a part of and the foster dogs that come into our home. I would rather be safe than sorry. To me $6 a year per dog is worth the prevention. I get a bunch of crap too for doing my own but I have been taught how to do vaccines so it makes more sense to me. Don't get me wrong our kids still go to the vet for a yearly check up but I am not going to pay our vet $30 for a vaccine when I can do it myself for $5 or less....JMO

I also do not vaccinate for Bordatella, the vaccine is not very effective and the disease is not life threatening, generally resolving on its own.

I vaccinate for Bordatella, but if you do it I would recommend the shot and not the intranasal. I don't think the intranasal is very effective. And yes, my dogs have gotten kennel cough on the vaccine (intranasal) and probably would have had it much worse than they did had they not been vaccinated. It was a nasty strain and they got it at a Petapalooza where there were lots of rescues. With all the different dogs they come into contact with I definitely feel more comfortable vaccinating them.

Chase went to the Vet today for shots and yes, got his bordetella vaccine too. I switch back and forth between the injectable and Intranasal vaccine type. (Personal preference). My Vet charges $20 for either. By the way, I got my flu shot in November and guess what, I'm just now getting over the flu. I had only a very mild case compared to year's past when I didn't get the vaccine. Would I get another? You bet!

Thanks everyone for the info! This is the first dog we have had that has spent a lot of time around other dogs. We do need to have him vaccinated once a year to be able to attend doggy day care and to participate in the obedience and agility classes that we take. However, I had never heard of giving it more often than once a year.

Jake used to be at doggie daycare 5 days a week and his vet is on site and she never suggested more than once a year.

Mary - where is there a doggie daycare near you? I would never have thought there was one around there.
