Dont Miss! Hearing Protection Required For G.R. Event Next Week

Post by Intellabs on Wed Mar 09, 2011 5:41 pm

I just thought I would let everyone know who will be at Devos Place next week, to bring thier choice of hearing protection!! Oops!

Hershey is a professional barker!! By no means does he attempt to hide his excitement!! Around the house, he looks at me and barks all the time. Can't imagine what he will be like wheh see's the pool. Just wanted to let everyone know that ear plugs might come in handy and to put them on your list of things to bring. Maybe I will bring some for everyone!! Scream!!!

Bringing Izzo on Sunday. He gets pretty jealous when Smokey is jumping. He may bark a bit.

I have heard through a very reliable source that they are only allowing three dogs out of the back area at a time this year. So barking will probably be kept to a minimum this at this event this year.

Are you serious? I love this event, but if they want to have a dog event they have to expect some dog noise.

We get some events that want us to keep the noise level lower this is one of them! It's very noisy there I'm sure we can help them keep it lower!

It's been my experience that all indoor events are noisy. It's the nature of the beast. It's a good idea to take steps to lessen excessive noise to some extent in an indoor environment but I did not think it was that bad last year.

I hope everyone realizes that the subject of the post was meant to be humorous. I was not complaining about barking or anything.

My response may not be popular but I have two words..... bark collars.

I have a barking lab, so I know how annoying it can be. We put a bark collar on Quinn and she shuts right up. It required vibration of the dogs vocal cords, so other dogs barking does NOT set it off. We were at Outdoorama, and it was really bad. You could not hear yourself think. Also barking wears a dog down it really does. In the crates the dogs should be kept quiet, either with a collar or covering them up. At hunt tests is is extremely frowned upon for a dog to bark. They can not bark in the blinds, coming to the line and definitely not when running or they are disqualified. You can teach a dog to not bark and channel their energy into the jump and run on the dock.

We only allow Quinn to bark "on" the dock, and when running agility any other time we stop it.

I don't use a bark collar but I do agree with Ann. Brooks gets excited and I will allow him to bark when he is waiting in line for his turn to jump but I do reprimand him when he barks when he is not in line and he does know the difference. I keep him covered up in his crate when he is in there. I do this so he can have a little bit of "down" time too.
While I understand that the dogs are excited, I don't really see why the dog has to be sitting in his crate just barking away without their person attempting to quiet them down...just my personal opinion.

Has anyone tried an anxiety face wrap (looks a little like a gentle leader); supposed to redirect the dog's attention and stop barking?

We will have access to the back women's restroom which will be closed to general public. It's rather large and we can use it for kenneling the dogs that have problems with excessive barking. The room will also be warmer than the general area which will make this a sought after area to keep dogs and crates.
