Dont Miss! Lure Coursing

Post by MOOSE on Mon Jul 14, 2008 9:27 pm

Torin has such drive for toys and stuff that looks like little fur balls that move that I would like to try her out in lure coursing. Does anyone know of a way to get involved with this?

There is a place in Ann Arbor that has "fun" lure runs. HOWEVER they do not run very often. We have been trying to get Belle there for 2 years. Either we have other plans by the time we find out about the run OR last year Belle had a seizure just a day before and my vet wanted us to wait until we made sure there was nothing wrong with her. They have not had a run yet this year. Last year their first one was in Aug.

Here is their website. If you find out more places LET ME KNOW!!!!! Belle wants to chase a bag around a field!

http://www.arboroads.com/

They do have an "All Hounds Day" and if you know someone with a hound you can come play too. I need to meet someone with a hound OR I could put longer ears on Belle.

Yeah, I've been waiting for lure coursing at that place too, but have either forgotten to check or checked too late. I wish they had an email list that would alert people when they do plan to have it.

I'd also love to find a place close to Ann Arbor that does terrier racing. They sometimes have it at the Earthdog practice we go to, but it's over an hour's drive away from us ;-(

It can't be that hard to make up a lure coursing rig to take to a park or field. I bet with a small motor, car battery, some plastic pulleys and a little cable I could come up with something... Yeah, like I need another project. Rockysmom, why don't you stop me from thinking out loud?

Couldn't you just spend about $100 and get a quick radio controlled car?

I tried that with Rocky once. I ended up with a tired dog and a broken radio controlled car. See, the problem is that the battery eventually goes dead and the dog can catch the car. After chasing that stupid car with the thingy on it for 5 minutes there is a bit of pent up anger and hostility directed at the car. Unfortunately the car loses everytime.

Shhh Rajah - he doesn't need another toy. On the other hand, it would keep Rocky and Jason both entertained.

I actually know the owner in a previous life (ok my days with horses) she does email me...sometimes. I will post if I hear anything.

That would be great. Thanks, Ann!

Any chance you could convince her to build a set of Earthdog tunnels, too? ;-)

You could have them chase a laser pointer. dancin monkey Of course you don't want to abuse them with that crazy thing.

Belle has no interest in that. She is OBSESSIVE about "lures". When we were at Mutt Strutt, they had a generator for power, and someone had probably dropped a bag they had in their pocket for poo. Belle saw the bag and heard the generator and went NUTS!!!! At one of our agility trials recently we were set up not too far from the ring. Some one had set a bag of necessary stuff just outside the ring, in front of where we were crated. Belle saw the bag and started throwing a fit. I was worried she would not focus in the ring (she was fine). This dog, why can't she be that obsessive with dock jumping Dang Nab It! She does get that way when she first walks into an agility venue. She sees the course and goes FREAKIN NUTS. In her defense though, she has gotten REALLY excited a couple times when she has seen the pool and dock. I would like it if when she gets like that I could get her on the dock right at that moment! It has not worked out and by the time we can get to the dock her moment has passed. Oh so Sad She really can be a lab!

Maybe we could run a lure down and off the dock? Just kidding! Hehe.

Kel BELIEVE me that is what Art has been trying to figure out! We tried her "chase it"...that didn't work. I will say she pretty much only jumps (when she jumps) for her bumper.
