Dont Miss! Charity Event: Sept 13th Flint Goes to the Dogs

Post by Laszlo's Botond on Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:59 am

Sept 12-13th I am putting together a charity event with the East Flint Lions club to help raise money for a Leader dog PR dog. His name is maxwell and had to have treatments for tumors. He had surgery, radiation and chemo. Because he is a PR dog and not placed there was no funding for this. MSU decided not to give him a discount for the same reasons. THe cost of the treatment is now over 12,000. There will be a pig roast on saturday, Speakers from leader dog, a pointing dog demo, speakers from therapy dogs, I am working on getting a fun disc competition, raffle prizes, I have verbal commitments for other things but I am not going to release the info untill it is finalised.

However, I am in search of donation items for raffles, ect....I am trying to keep it an all dog type event. If there is anything anyone can provide for raffles orI know some of you are into other dogs sports and would like to also hold a fun event or demo to help the cause it would be greatly appreciated.

You can PM me post it here or email me

A bit of history from Max's owner:

Maxwell is a fully trained, graduate Leader Dog who was placed with a man out west. The guy soon ended up not using Max and wanted him returned to the school for reassignment to another blind person. I happend to be the Field Representative who picked Max up and brought him back to Michigan. Maxwell so impressed me on the trip that I mentioned to the school that he would make a great PR dog (my own dogs are 11 & 13 years old and well beyond their PR days). A few weeks after he returned a lump was found on Max - right where his harness buckles - which prevented us from placing him with another blind person. I officially adopted Maxwell for the purposes of PR for Leader Dog. Unfortunately the lump came back again twice, each time substantially larger and more aggressive. The MSU Oncology Clinic offered Max the chance at a normal - surgery and pain free life....but at a cost He still has one surgery to go to remove the jugular port.

Although Max and I continued to do PR programs for the school, the "adoption" technicality made Maxwell, and all the cost associated with him, .....my problem. Details about this aspect of the story will be gladly shared in person as will any and all of his medical diagnosis/prognosis/bills (please understand that this whole scenario puts me in a rather awkward position).

On a brighter note...we "think" he may have a bit of peach fuzz growing back in the radiation burn zone !

You can pencil this in as a short dock event as well...Still working out all the details but it sounds like it should be a go....again thanks milt and UAD for helping make this a successful event.

At the risk of sounding incredibly ignorant, what do the initials "PR" stand for Thom? Thanks in advance for the clarification.

No problem "PR" Public Relations or Promotional dog...He does demos, goes into schoold and meets kids. Things of that nature. That way when they need a fully trained dog to put on a demo or to help train someone they have one available

Ok just an update on some of the raffle and auction prizes.

1 Spring turkey hunt
2 5 Pheasant preserve hunt
1 guided grouse hunt up north with a pointing dog
Dog Baskets
Dog crate bed

I am sure I am missing some things.

I am sure there will be more I am working on that this next few weeks.

There will be a Disc event Toss and Fetch with Free style Demo
a Search and Rescue demo.
Leader Dog Demo.
Pointing dog training Demo.
A pig Roast

I have a few other things in the works. I have contacted people about a weight pull and terrior races....However I am still trying to get thouse to work out. It should be a great time. Once I get for sures on the out standing invites I will set times and get fliers out. Also we are allowing vendors to set up booths for a small donation. $50. So if you know any vendors that want to come please let them know we are makeing it affordable for them and the proceeds from the booth will go to the charity.
