We are new
Hi,
Nessa and I are new to this, and are hopefully going to enter our first event in Novi. She has done some practice/play jumps at Premeir and at Flint. I have a few questions though, If going for a UKC title she needs to qualify in 5 splashes? If We enter all 5 splashes in Novi- and are very lucky could she title in one weekend? One more question....does she have to stay and leave when I send her?..I most likely will be doing this on my own and she gets very excited and does not wait...sometimes jumps before I throw her bumper. I am sure I will have many more questions, LOL!
Thanks,
Patty and Nessa

Re: We are new
Patty, we have lots of helpers to get you started! You can have 2 people on dock if you need help getting your dog to sit/stay!

Thanks! I will (and do) appreciate the help! Nessa loves to do this, it is so suprising that after playing at Premier, she knew the pool when we went to Flint, and got so excited!

Re: We are new
This sport is addicting to the handlers and the dogs!!! I was at Premier, I am sorry I don't remember you. I will try to look for you at Novi, I will be there too.
As for the UKC title. If you are so lucky and your dog jumps all five jumps in the same division class at Novi and you are registered with the UKC then conceivably yes you can earn your UKC title in one event. Your jumps have to be in the same division and that can be the "hard" part
Some new dogs start tentatively and quickly jump bigger and bigger, thus they may have jumps in 2 or 3 different divisions. However if you don't get your title at Novi, then you will just have to come play some more at our other events...aw shucks
Look forward to meeting you!

LOL! Won't mind coming out and playing some more, I have a few more dogs I would like to get going, too. I was only at Premier on Thursday or was it Friday(?)...well anyway, it was the day we had our URC Specialty. Some of us came over to play afterwards. The way Nessa sang while waiting her turn, I think she would be hard to forget..

Re: We are new
Hi and welcome to UAD! I'm not sure if we met at Premier or not... I'd have to know what breed of dog you have first before remembering, lol.
Anyway, it's not necessary for your dog to sit/down stay and many competitors use a holder to help get their dog really excited before being released anyway. Also, there is the Place and Send method, which involves throwing the toy out first, then taking your dog back to your chosen start spot (some people use the full dock, others do not. It all depends on your dog's stride length -to get the best takeoff point at the dock's edge- along with experience level), and then releasing them. The P&S method tends to get you a little less height sometimes (as the dog is not following the toy through the air, like in The Chase method), but tends to encourage a lot of speed, on the other hand. So, if your dog has a lot of natural "pop", you're just a really bad throw (like many of us, lol), or you're working on adding speed down the dock, P&S can work well. The Chase works well for dogs who target the toy well, have good speed, and have handlers who can throw... lol. Many people switch back and forth from time to time or combine methods, depending on their individual dog. I personally prefer The Chase, but also use P&S every so often to keep things from getting predictable, along with encouraging speed down the dock (not that my boys ever lack enthusiasm or speed! Lol).
Anyway, I don't think we'll be at Novi, but hopefully we'll see you at another event in the future. Best of luck!
